NYC Salon: The Bionic Ear Cochlear Implants & More
December 13, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
We fundamentally believe that both lecture and discussion are necessary for our events and our only requirement for speakers is that they construct an activity that encourages conversation and lets attendees feel the material they learn. As such, the NYC Salon strives to be something whose Twitter description would be, “TED with friends.”
The chances that you know of someone with partial hearing loss are astoundingly high, as it is estimated that 5% of the earth’s population has some form of partial hearing loss. However, hearing is the sense that has been most affected by technological breakthroughs and cochlear implants are leading the way in ensuring that everyone can have aurual experiences. Dr. Maja Švrakić is going to teach us about the main causes of hearing loss and how cochlear implants correct hearing in the impaired. We will also chat about the future of hearing devices and what signal processing and nanotechnology might provide in the next generation of auditory correction technologies.
