Lunch in the Den: Art & Tech with Javi de la Fuente and Marco Castro Cosio

October 8, 2016 @ 7:30 am - 8:30 am

How about feeding your mind as well as your stomach for lunch? Join us for a facilitated discussion on the intersection of arts and technology with two people pushing the boundaries of these disciplines. BYOL.

Javi de la Fuente is a maker, avid Lego tinkerer, and researcher at the Universidad del Desarollo in Chile. Her work bridges traditional craft practices with public infrastructure and sustainability practices, all infused with a sense of play and learning. Her most recent projects include Project Patagonia, which addresses the difficulties of researchers related to decision on preservation of ecosystems, associated with the costs of monitoring stations, the times it takes and collection it self of data through the creation of a system of information gathering incorporating the more than 200,000 visitors to the national Park Torres del Paine.

Marco Castro Cosio is an interaction designer, light installation collector, and founder of BusRoots, a public and playful project that uses plants as a creative medium, and connects the citizens with their community while trying to use the least amount of resources and improving the quality of the environment around it. He is the former manager of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s MediaLab where he was leading the way in bringing digital integrations to the traditional art world. Prior to this he was the Visual Experience Manager at the Queens Museum, and artist-in-residence at the Flux Factory.

Javi has been working on two projects in South America:

Project PatagoniaPROJECT PATAGONIA

The project addresses the difficulties of researchers related to decision on preservation of ecosystems, associated with the costs of monitoring stations ,the times it takes and collection it self of data through the creation of a system of information gathering incorporating the more than 200,000 visitors to the national Park Torres del Paine.

Visitors collaboration is achieved from analysis of photographs taken during their stay to the park and the information provided by sensors on their mobile devices (Accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer). This data, in addition of informa- tion from weather monitoring stations installed in specific places, provide suffi- cient material for a first stage of analysis, which will identify possible patterns in the behavior of the biodiversity of the area in less time, thus supporting conser- vation same.

This project enters within the context of “citizen science” where people engage voluntarily, driven by their curiosity and interest in projects dedicated to science. This system makes the visitor as key players in the information gathering incor- porating data from dynamic, efficient and effective manner.

This approach solves the difficulties related to the cost and time for monitoring, which currently leads to delayed making decisions and associated damage to ecosystems.

ChanchoCHANCHO SENSOR

POMAIRE is a rural town in central Chile where clay handcrafting is the main economic activity. Environmental and health problems such as arthritis and air pollution are of great concern due to poor infrastructure.

Another important concern is the migration of youth to cities and the risk of loosing the tradition of handcrafting. Chancho sensor represents the blend of tradition and modernity: recognizing the properties of clay, highlighting the piggy bag shape and the functionality of sensors.

These units have been displayed to measure air quality for local management of wood ovens, but also to find novel ways for dialogue about technology in a rural town and to recognize culture and context before all.

Ubiquity and commodization of information tools such as sensors has provided some societies with real-time data for diverse purposes, this has been true for only a small part of the globe. Most rural and low-income communities cannot simply afford this; unfortunately these are also the communities where effective information is needed to prevent important environmental and health problems.
